[Lyrics] Akatsuki – Love Letter of Brilliant Cherry Blossoms (Hana Akari no Koibumi)

Love Letter of Brilliant Cherry Blossoms (Hana Akari no Koibumi*1)

When the surface of the water blooms into bright pink
Those far off days come to mind
In but a brief moment of overlap
This season that pierces my heart is a painful dream

I don’t want to forget, for all eternity
This warmth
No matter how many times we part and reunite
I want to embrace you and tell you

“Even the blossoming flowers…” the feelings I have on these Sakura filled nights *2
A far off promise in a love letter
Unchanging
No matter how many years pass
I shall write “even the blossoming flowers…”
I cannot express in words
Your beautiful visage
Will I be able to see those eyes of yours once again? (Lit by the moon)
This dawn of love, steeped in lantern’s light *3

This season where light petals dance in the sky, covering one’s eyes
Is but a painful dream

There is a smile that does not fade
Even as time passes
There is but one who I will always remember
No matter how much their outward appearance changes

“Even the blossoming flowers…” I believe these words I’ve composed*4
Will someday reach that heart
We shall meet under an open sky
Amidst the fragrant full blossoms
Can you hear it? I see a beautiful vision of you
Behind my closed eyes… (looking at the moon)
This dawn of love entrusted to the falling cherry blossoms

The passing days are like a dream
Like the far off sky
This fragment of a memory that I left back in that day
Flutters in the wind
I shall remember, even a thousand years from now
I shall continue to wait, for years and years
Even if it becomes a song with no known author
I shall think of you

I don’t want to forget, for all eternity
This warmth
No matter how many times we part and reunite
I want to embrace you and tell you

“Even the blossoming flowers…” the feelings I have on these Sakura filled nights
A far off promise in a love letter
Unchanging
No matter how many years pass
I shall write “even the blossoming flowers…”
Overflowing words
I send them to you, my beloved*5
Dreaming once again of the your eyes (lit by the moon)
This dawn of love, steeped in lantern’s light

Translator’s notes

*1 The term “hana akari” here has several meanings. Read aloud, it refers to the phenomenon where the cherry blossoms are in full bloom to the extent that even the night seems brighter because of them. The kanji here however literally is ‘flower’ and ‘light/lamp.’

*2 This is the beginning of the Iroha poem, read more about it here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iroha

*3 Dawn in Japanese is “Akatsuki”

*4 The word for ‘composed’ is Tsuzuru (綴る) which is the same word in Omohide Tsuzuri

*5 Literally “Send them to beautiful you” but this sounds awkward so I took some liberties

Note: I love this song so much and it’s the Akatsuki love song. I wanted to try and capture the poetry of the original lyrics as best as I could. Special thanks to @denego_ for taking a look at this and helping me edit for flow! And special shout out to @camus!
